Black Cats’ Looks: Family Ties, Stylish Comfort, and Durags

November has come and the sun has gone. As winter is fast approaching, people are starting to put more focus on how they dress. Picking the right pieces is important here at Northwestern, where the temperatures can drastically change within a moment. Here are some profiles of Black students on campus who defined what mattered most to them when they choose their day-to-day fits. Many of them are rooted in the same ideas, yet show their own interpretation of those ideas in their clothing.

What are you wearing right now?

I am currently wearing wide-leg overalls with my cheap, knockoff Dr. Marten boots. Underneath my overalls, I’m wearing a red hoodie.

How would you describe your everyday style?

So, I don’t really have a set style. I kind of just go with whatever accentuates whatever feature I want to accentuate that day. Today’s my hair so I’m wearing bright colors to accentuate my bright hair. In general, I usually try to style something tight with something baggy. So if I have baggy jeans I’m probably gonna wear just a bra! Or if I have really tight pants I might wear an oversized t-shirt to just compliment it. So I really like balance in terms of mixing and matching pieces and seeing how they complement each other.

Do you focus on style or comfort?

I focus on comfort 110 percent, but if it happens so that the comfort incorporates style, I’m all for it!

Where do you find your inspiration?

I kind of just look at cool people and think, “Damn, I wanna look like that.” I don’t try to buy pieces that help me look like them but I kind of do look to see “Oh, they were wearing a leather jacket. Leather jackets are in, I should probably invest in a leather jacket.” Same with Dr. Martens boots. Like, I saw a bunch of girls on Instagram wearing them so I was like, “Oh, this would look really good with some fit in the fall. I should probably invest in some. Don’t have the money for them, but I can get some cheap knockoff ones and pretend like I have the money for them.” So it just like depends on what I see. I believe primarily social media and blogs I follow is where I get my inspiration and aesthetic.

What are you wearing right now?

Right now I’m wearing gray shorts and a gray jacket under a green North Face puffy jacket, and a durag.

How would you describe your everyday style?

I would describe it as “whatever I have in my closet.” Usually, it’s like pants, and I layer my tops usually because my upper body gets cold the most.

Do you focus on style or comfort?

I think it definitely depends. Throughout the week, I’d say my style is a mix of both. I have a lot of basic colors and that kind of helps it be stylistic but at the same time, it’s comfortable. The pants I wear, they’re stretch-fit, and the crewnecks are very comfortable. So I try to keep it all together.

Where do you find your inspiration?

So I go to Uniqlo, and I watch people on Youtube to figure out what I should buy that will be a good fit for everyday usage. My style is kind of like, I could wear it any day, any scenario.

What are you wearing right now?

I’m wearing a maroon bomber jacket, with a navy blue tee and dark jeans, and Toms boots.

How would you describe your everyday style?

I like to think it’s clean and simple. It’s not very flashy, but I still stand out.

Do you focus on style or comfort?

My sister and I always argue over that, and my mom too. Because I always tell them “style over comfort.” And my mom says, “You’re gonna regret that. When you go to school and freeze your explicit off.” You gotta have both, but usually, I prioritize style over comfort.

Where do you find your inspiration?

I started watching this Youtuber junior year [of high school]. His name is Jose Zuniga. He owns like, 5 brands, one is fashion, others are grooming. Instagram a lot of the time too. And I like to eat alone just to observe everybody else. It’s nice to eat with friends but I like to eat alone and observe what other people are wearing. Maybe incorporate what they’re wearing into my style if I have it in my closet. My favorite piece is a denim jacket. It can be worn in so many different ways.

What are you wearing right now?

Right now I’m wearing some jeans, my lovely Special Edition Air Force 1s, a “Welcome Home NU” shirt that I cropped, these earrings by Friends Who Earring and this really old sweater. How would you describe your everyday style? It’s usually pretty casual. I wear a lot of sweaters, it’s cold. Just trying to be warm. I almost always wear pants.

Do you focus on style or comfort?

I definitely do both. If I’m trying to be comfortable, then I’ll try to figure out how to be stylishly comfortable.

Where do you find your inspiration?

I really like the girl band, Little Mix and H.E.R. Yeah, that’s kind of it. Sometimes I feel like I dress like the poor people called Urinetown. That’s a good way to explain it!

What are you wearing right now?

So right now, I got on some ripped jeans, I don’t know what brand. I can’t tell you ’cause I got this from Ross. I got on a LeBron James hoodie, the “I Am More Than An Athlete Nike” hoodie. It’s amazing, it’s really comfortable. It represents something I’m really passionate about. Underneath that, I have on a “God And Grind Everyday” t-shirt. God And Grind Everyday (GAGE) is my friend’s brand back in Los Angeles, his name is Earl Ramsey. I design for them, so I’m wearing a shirt that we worked on together. I got a durag on because I’m tryna get back to dippin’. I just cut my hair off tryna get some waves. I’m chilling right now so I just got me some puma slides on with some socks. Y’know real chill stuff. Earlier I was wearing my Jordans but I put on my slides for comfort.

How would you describe your everyday style?

I kind of just dress like any other basketball player type. I wear a lot of hoodies, I usually don’t wear jeans. I only wore jeans because we were going out so I wanted to be presentable. I usually just wear sweat pants, hoodie, and basketball shoes. That’s pretty much what I’m wearing all the time. I’m not really big on style, but you know I like to be cozy. And sometimes when I do like to dress nice, I like accents, so like I’ll throw on my chains or earrings to add a little bit of accents to what I’m wearing. I don’t get a lot of opportunities to wear short sleeves but since we inside I get to wear some short sleeves because I like to show off my tattoos. It’s a part of my style. So, I really focus on accents and really just hoodies and sweatpants. It’s all who I am.

Do you focus on style or comfort?

I feel I can do both but also, I probably dress more for comfort all the time. Like I said, I’m not too big on style but if I do like gotta dress up a little bit then you know get some nice Jordan’s, throw on a nicer hoodie, and then probably some jeans, and then I’m good to go. So that’s what I consider style, but I definitely dress for comfort. Because you know, I’m in a place where I need to be comfortable with who I am. So that’s what I do.

What are you wearing right now?

Right now, I’m wearing this yellow sweater that I got two years ago. I thrifted this. I’m wearing these khaki pants that I ordered from Fashion Nova. I got them pretty recently actually. They were like 10 dollars so I had to get it. And I’m wearing these black Huaraches that I got freshman year of high school. They’re literally the most expensive item I own, so you can tell I don’t spend a lot of money on clothing and stuff.

How would you describe your everyday style?

I would describe it as very me. I don’t think there is another way to describe it other than “Djamila” just because I feel there are so many times I look at myself and think, “This doesn’t really fall into one category of like style,” if that makes sense. It changes with like the mood I’m in, so I don’t think there’s a word that encompasses all that it is.

Do you focus on style or comfort?

I think you can definitely do both. I think I do focus a little bit more on comfort because I don’t know, I just like being comfortable. If I can’t move in the clothes that I’m in, it’s not for me, you know? I have these pair of pants, my favorite pair of pants, they’re so comfortable but they’re like huge. If I don’t wear them with a belt, they’ll literally fall. And like I remember on move-in day I was with my dad, and then he was like, “Why are you wearing these big ass pants?” and I was like, “They’re just nice! And they’re comfortable!” They really mean a lot to me because they’re stylish and also because they’re comfortable so I think you can definitely do both.

Where do you find your inspiration?

I do think it’s a lot of social media. When I see something I like on social media, I sort of adopt those ideas and kind of like change them a little bit to what I would want best. But also, I think just like…it’s my mind! Like this outfit, I don’t know if I’ve seen this on social media. Probably? Maybe not. But I was just looking at my wardrobe and I was like, “This looks like, feels like fall!” It’s fall and I’m in the mood for that. So, it’s just what inspired my outfit today and that’s what it does all the time.

What are you wearing right now?

This is my “Monday-don’t-want-to-be-seen” look. I just put on a hat, it says “Wavy” on it, a cropped black sweater type thing with some mom jeans and some white Nikes. Just like comfortable, Monday kind of fit.

How would you describe your everyday style?

I would say very like comfortable, athletic, streetwear-type style. If I really wanna go crazy, maybe something a little bit more. But yeah, maybe vintage. Or at least I try to.

Do you focus on comfort or style?

Definitely both. Some days more comfy than usual, especially on this campus. But definitely both just cause it’s fun. I really like a lot of old streetwear looks lately, so yeah.

Where do you find your inspiration?

I have like this whole folder on Instagram of Black streetwear people, so I like their clothes. Also, my friend, Jordan, I just look at her and think, “I need to do better.” Also, old streetwear, old looks, 90s, Rihanna.

What are you wearing right now?

A pink, off-the-shoulder top, and my ripped jeans with my Ugg boots. My mom got me this necklace for graduation, it’s called the Tree of Life. These earrings, I thought they were just the coolest earrings I’ve ever seen so I just thought, ‘I have to get these.’

How would you describe your everyday style?

My everyday style is like, leggings, a sweatshirt because I have no time to get ready in the morning.

Do you focus on style or comfort?

I think I can do both, but I mainly focus on comfort because I don’t care that much anymore I’m just ready to get out the door.

What are you wearing right now?

Right now, I am wearing a long, cream, Free People sweater that I stole from my mom. I’m wearing grey leggings that I also stole from my mom. My hair is half up half down and there’s a napkin, like a cloth napkin that my friend found at a thrift store. She bought a pack of them for really cheap and she was just giving them out to us to wear in our hair. I’m wearing my Timbs that I got at Nordstrom Rack with pink socks to match the flowers on the napkin.

How would you describe your everyday style?

Cute and functional for the weather. I find that when I feel cute I’m most productive. So, personally for me, if I feel that I’m not dressed for success so to speak, like if I’m wearing sweatpants or my pajamas to class then I’m probably gonna fall asleep and I’m not gonna pay attention, and I’m not really putting myself in the best space to do my best here. So, I’ve been making an effort to feel cute every day. Yeah, I don’t know if there’s a name for it, other than my mother’s wardrobe that I stole from before we left home. It’s very femme. I wear what makes me feel good that I can get at a discount!

Do you focus on comfort or style?

Oh, you can totally do both! I mean, some will say leggings aren’t pants, but here I am anyway wearing them as full-on pants. I think that comfort and style are something that can happen at the same time if you’re smart about it. And also, if I’m in something that I’m physically uncomfortable in, then that also doesn’t make me productive. If I’m just in overalls that I look super cute in, but can only wear for three hours before I’m just so uncomfortable that I just need to change, then there’s something like that, where you’re spending so much time thinking about what you’re wearing to the point where it hinders what you’re focusing on in your life. And you shouldn’t do it.

Where do you find your inspiration?

I work at home at this boutique that sells a lot of really good brands, and my mom styles all the customers there, so she puts a lot of effort into making sure she looks cute so that they trust her judgment basically. It’s like a boho style, I feel that it’s hard to categorize the things you wear.

How would you describe your everyday style?

Ibrahima: I would say I’m always chilling.

Evains: Comfy.

Caleb: Bummy Chic. Somewhere between streetwear and I don’t wanna get out of bed.

Where do you find your inspiration?

Ibrahima: That’s a tough question. I would say it comes from two different places, in terms of how I grew up, like so definitely the Bronx but also SOHO Manhattan. Two different ways of dressing and I kind of combine them both.

Evains: My sister. When I was back home with my sister, I’d be walking out, she’d be like, “Are you gonna go out the house like that?” I’d be like, “Yeah.” She’d be like, “You can’t wear bright pink and bright green.” I’d be like, “Well why not?” but now I have a better sense of that. I would say senior year I got my own type of style and now I try to continue that because I like how it’s been going along. But if I see someone wearing something I like or a pair a shoes that have me like, “Dang, that’s kinda tough” then I’ll try to keep it into consideration.

Caleb: My brother, bro. Do you remember the bleach trend? Yea, he did that before anybody. The tie-dye also, and he would wear like women’s jeggings and wear it to school and people would be like “Bro, that nigga look good as shit.” He would find random shit at Goodwill before thrifting became a thing and he just took risks and shit, so yeah. I fucking love my brother. He’s dope as fuck.

So I’ve heard you make your own clothes. Can you kind of describe what that looks like?

Yeah, it really depends. Sometimes I customize clothes. I’ll take an everyday object that I find boring and I’ll draw or write something on it. Or, sometimes I’ll make the clothes. The other day I made a pair of pants. I designed the fabric online and then ordered the fabric.

Where do you find your inspiration for what you decide to wear or create?

Social media, like on Tumblr there’s a lot of fashion designers. I just explore different ways of expressing myself, I don’t really know how to describe it.
